Why we advocate for a net zero world

Driving climate action together

We are taking responsibility for our emissions. We are committed to the Paris Agreement and to contribute to limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. This includes a commitment to reducing absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the value chain by at least 50% by 2030, compared to a 2016 baseline, and to reach net-zero emissions by the latest 2050 without using carbon offsets. In addition, to become climate positive, we will remove and store carbon through forestry and agriculture along with contributing to additional reductions in society by going beyond our value chain.*

Together with our partners across sectors, we can play a role in accelerating climate action even further by advocating and positively influencing the private sector and governments and involving the many people.

We do this by engaging at key events (e.g. COPs, Climate Week, WEF), driving initiatives such as the WEF Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders, motivating our business network to access the SME Climate Hub initiative, and fostering dialogue with key stakeholders and policy makers.

Our engagements

Creating a better tomorrow together

We believe that climate actions and investments from businesses in line with 1.5°C provide governments with the necessary backing to implement more ambitious climate targets, plans and actions. These government targets, policies and plans in turn provide the clarity, predictability and a level playing field that will encourage more businesses to take or increase climate action and make investments in line with 1.5°C . The result is a positive government policy-business action ambition loop driving the necessary systemic change.

It is important, that the actions taken are based on (scientific) evidence showing the positive impact on climate, people, and the planet. Businesses are most efficient when operating in a global market with harmonized standards and legislation that reduce the administrative burden to what is necessary. Where possible, it is critical to ensure the consistency of policies to provide clarity and certainty for all.

Driving large-scale, systemic change, together

 Together, we need to:

  • Strive towards electrification, phase out fossil fuels and transition towards 100% renewable energy while improving energy efficiency.
  • Use more materials and food ingredients with a low carbon footprint, promote sustainable choices and transform into circular businesses. This will reduce the need to extract and process new, raw materials. Together, we can assemble a net zero world that is better for all.

Our Climate Advocacy Positions

In our advocacy engagement – directly to stakeholders and also through our partners – we are guided by our own positions:

  • IKEA is committed to the Paris Agreement and to contribute to limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
  • IKEA is committed to becoming climate positive by 2030 by reducing more greenhouse gas emissions than the IKEA value chain emits, while still growing the IKEA business. This includes a commitment to halve the absolute net GHG emissions from the total IKEA value chain by 2030.
  • IKEA strives towards 100% renewable energy and the phase out of fossil fuels across the value chain by 2030.
  • IKEA is committed to zero-emission transport across our operations for all the supply of IKEA products between suppliers and retailers by 2040.
  • The IKEA ambition is to be circular and climate positive by 2030. As a part of this, IKEA has a zero waste to landfill commitment, has developed circular design principles for its products, and is providing more circular offerings to help prolong the life of our products. We advocate for wide-scale systems change through circular legislation and collaborations and invest in circular capacity including industrial recycling facilities.

  • Ingka Group supports the need to develop regulated carbon markets with an escalating carbon price to enable greater competitiveness of low-carbon technologies, and control leakage through international cooperation on a global, connected carbon market.
  • Ingka Group supports the European Commission in its aims to promote high-quality ESG standards through is proposed Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) to develop globally accepted standards for sustainability reporting that can be compatible with a double materiality approach.

We encourage other businesses to:

  • Set science-based goals in line with the 1.5°C target to halve emissions by 2030 (according to the new net zero standard), achieve net zero by 2050 the latest, with a clear roadmap and mechanisms on how to get there, while transparently reporting on progress.
  • Collaborate within and across sectors and drive advocacy and actions in alliances and initiatives such as the WEF CEO Climate Leaders Alliance, RE100, EV100, The We Mean Business Coalition or the World Resource Institute and many others.
  • Contribute to internationally harmonized standards on measuring and reporting.
  • Start taking steps to reduce their emissions by sharing information about sustainability and tools such as the SME Climate Hub. We want to inspire businesses and make climate actions accessible to all.

We welcome the following actions from governments:

  • Increasegreenhouse gas reduction targets in line with the 1.5°C target to halve emissions by 2030 (so called Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)) and reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 at the latest.
  • Set short and long-term policies in line with the 1.5°C target to finance and accelerate the transition to renewable energy, circularity, as well as sustainable transport, food systems, reducing food waste, agriculture, and forestry.
  • Invest in necessary infrastructure to enable businesses and people to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Developed countries should meet their commitment of investing at least $100B in developing countries’ climate action.
  • Contribute to internationally harmonized standards on measuring and reporting.

In our advocacy initiatives we engage in more detail on topics like renewable energy, sustainable mobility, circularity, finance, and international standards.

Our commitments and actions

We are committed to the Paris Agreement and to contribute to limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. This includes a commitment to reducing absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the value chain by at least 50% by 2030, compared to a 2016 baseline, and to reach net-zero emissions by the latest 2050 without using carbon offsets. Our commitments

*Ingka Group follows the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) established target-setting process to commit to and set science-based targets. We first set climate SBT’s in 2018 and updated our targets in 2023 in alignment with the Net-Zero Standard and have submitted these to SBTi for approval in November 2023 – they are now under review. Under the IKEA brand there are several entities, therefore Ingka Group and Inter IKEA have set climate science-based targets and report on these separately. Ingka’s SBT’s cover scope 1,2 and 3 emissions from Retail (as the biggest IKEA franchisee), Ingka Investment and Ingka Centres.
