Driving a more sustainable future

IKEA and COP26 logos

At IKEA, we’re guided by our vision to create a better everyday life for the many people. A better planet is a better home for us all — but climate change threatens this for people today and generations to come.

That is why IKEA is committed to becoming climate positive by 2030. That means we’ll reduce more greenhouse gases than our value chain emits — all while growing our business. We are also committed to the Paris Agreement and to helping limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. To get there, we’re taking a number of actions to drastically reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Accelerating the move to clean transportation is key to this.Accelerating the move to clean transportation is key to this.

Electric vehicles for cleaner transport

Today, we deploy electric vehicles (EVs) for last mile home deliveries in 20 markets including China, Russia, Spain, France, India, the UK and many more; by 2025, we aim for 100 percent zero-emission home deliveries in 32 markets. Moreover, IKEA lent its design skills to Renault and MAN to help design the EV trucks we need in Paris and Berlin — optimising home deliveries and reducing the number of vehicles on the road at the same time. Already today, we offer EV charging at all stores where we offer parking in 32 markets. And in 2021, Ingka invested in DST — the largest EV operations platform in China.

Beyond using EVs, 2021 marked the first year that IKEA began to use liquefied biogas in heavy duty transportation in Italy. Liquefied biogas (LBG) comes from manure, food waste and other organic matter; it burns cleanly — and is 100 percent carbon neutral.

Last but not least, by 2030, IKEA aims to reduce absolute greenhouse gas emissions from product transport by 15 percent compared to 2017.

Our acceleration towards low carbon transport is a work in progress. Nevertheless, we hope that we inspire businesses, governments and policy makers to take ambitious climate action in this area.

Join us to rise to our greatest challenge

We urge businesses to set science-based targets in line with the 1.5°C degrees benchmark to halve emissions by 2030. A clear roadmap and transparent reporting are essential to this process. We also encourage businesses to collaborate across sectors and drive action within initiatives like EV100, the WEF CEO Climate Leaders Alliance, the We Mean Business Coalition, the World Resource Institute and many others.

When it comes to governments, we support the key demands from the We Mean Business Coalition regarding transport. Specifically, we ask that governments and policy makers implement increasingly stringent emission standards for all road vehicles. That includes continuing to promote fuel efficiency and shifting from cars and trucks to low emission transport modes. It also entails committing to 100 percent sales of zero emission vehicles (ZEVs) by 2035 for new, light-duty vehicles. Finally, we support states investing in infrastructure that would make EV charging reliable and seamless for all.

Climate change is our greatest challenge — but we’re ready to rise to it.

The moment is now.

Let’s assemble a better future.
