New York, 2050: A Possible Future – Ingka Group’s installation transferred to a new exhibition taking place in New York

An exhibition space first created for Ingka Group as part of its Actions Speaks Summit in New York during Climate Week has now been transferred to a major new photography and video exhibition in New York entitled COAL + ICE. The exhibition space was originally shown to the public in September 2023 through the theme of hope and optimism – focusing on what a positive vision of the future can look like in a net-zero New York by 2050. It explored the scientific reality of climate change through an immersive experience of sight, sound and smell.

“This is not about the state of our planet in 2050, it is about how we can learn, imagine, and act for a better future now and for the future generation”

– Ludvig Liljekvist, Leader for Action Speaks, Ingka Group

The exhibition visualises the causes and consequences of the climate crisis and centres creative solutions. It will be accompanied by a multidisciplinary program series with performances and activations throughout the city, designed to raise awareness and catalyze responses to the climate crisis.

It has been developed for Asia Society, whose purpose is to navigate shared futures for Asia and the world across policy, arts and culture, education, sustainability, business, and technology.

“We are delighted to support Asia Society so they can use the exhibition space from our Action Speaks Summit and reach even more people with an important message of hope and optimism around the climate crisis. We believe that climate action needs to connect emotionally and by making it personal we want to show that we all have a role to play and a responsibility. This is not about the state of our planet in 2050, it is about how we can learn, imagine, and act for a better future now and for the future generation,” says Ludvig Liljekvist, Leader for Action Speaks, Ingka Group.

As part of the IKEA ambition to advocate for urgent and ambitious climate action, Ingka Group first brought the exhibition to Climate Week NYC when the company hosted the Action Speaks Summit. The summit took place alongside the UN General Assembly and Climate Week NYC, and brought together businesses, NGO organisations and the general public, with the aim to spark urgent climate action.

The exhibition explores an immersive exhibition of what a positive vision of the future can look like in New York 2050. Visitors can explore the scientific reality of climate change, a positive vision for the future and get inspired from impactful climate solutions already out there.

In January the Action Speaks interactive platform was announced as part of the World Economic Forum in Davos. The platform will showcase available, impactful and scalable climate solutions and impactful good example ‘actions’ divided into different parts focusing on how we eat, power, move, make and grow. Solution examples range from addressing food waste to enhancing energy efficiency and protecting and restoring ecosystems. It was developed in collaboration with the World Economic Forum and is now hosted on WEF Forum Spaces.

“It is inspiring to see what has been achieved since we started this journey only 12 months ago. The most important thing now is that we continue to create a community of hope and encourage climate action at a scale. We need people, companies, and organisations like Asia Society to all contribute in their different ways to be part of solving the climate crisis. Only by working together, we can support the transition to net-zero by 2050,” concludes Ludvig Liljekvist.
